So many women are afraid to step into leadership positions because they’re already struggling to juggle so much, thinking, 'How could I possibly take on more responsibility?' Instead, they continue to exceed expectations and do the work of a leader, without getting the credit or the paycheck.
Are you one of those women? I was, for too long. In fact, just last week I was asked to take on more responsibility at the Erin Chamber of Commerce board, and I thought, how could I possibly do more?
Two facts I urge you to consider:
1. Leadership is not doing more. Leadership is leading more. Making better decisions, helping people get clear on what does and doesn't matter. It should take less time, not more.
2. More money in the hands of great women is how we will change this world. When you sign up for that promotion or side hustle to lead, you will earn more money, so you can outsource things to support more women in business, to free up your time to earn more money, and get more money into the hands of great women.
And maybe this part is just for me (but I think it's for you too) - Stop being afraid of taking that promotion, of putting yourself out there, of asking for more, because you are capable of so much more. More doesn’t mean more hours, it means leading more. It means inspiring others to do more. It means finding better, more efficient ways of doing things so we can all work less. It means setting boundaries. It means having the grit to get shit done, and the grace to take care of yourself in the process.
I've signed up to lead the Chamber Board for two more years, because I know I am capable of more, and you are too, more than the greatest scientist could ever imagine. Step up.
